The Searles dry lake is home to most of the minerals known to man. Not surprisingly, there are chemical processing plants taking advantage of this phenomenon. They provide the main reason for the existance of the town of Trona.

As you might expect, Trona marches to the beat of its own drum. They have their own high school and even a dirt golf course. Every year the Searles Lake Gem and Mineral Society hosts a show called the Gem-O-Rama. I've never made it out there for that, but hear it's well worth it.
