Books got me started in my Death Valley adventuring. Rocks become so much more interesting when you have some idea of what you're looking at. They also helped me to plan my trips by making me more aware of what was out there. The wildflower books make a good reference. I would go hiking and take pictures of whatever looked pretty or interesting, and then come home and look them up by color.
